Mississippi Moves to Strip 59 Insurance Agents of Licenses Over Residency and Application Claims

The Mississippi Insurance Department has taken enforcement action against 59 insurance producers, revoking their licenses after the agents failed to appear at a hearing concerning questions about their eligibility to hold Mississippi licenses. The department announced the decisions on July 23, 2026, following the July 20 proceeding.

The investigation began after information was provided to Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney and Deputy Commissioner David Browning by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and a health insurer. According to the information reviewed by state officials, the producers had pursued authorization to market health insurance through the federal marketplace while living outside Mississippi.

Investigators determined that most of the 59 agents were based in Florida. Officials also found instances in which criminal histories were allegedly omitted from licensing applications. Each producer had been notified of the June hearing process, but none attended the proceeding held in Jackson.

Commissioner Chaney said the department considered the residency issue and application information serious enough to warrant license revocation.

“The evidence is clear, these agents don’t live in Mississippi. They applied for a license here under false pretenses. To put it simply, they lied, and lying on the application, misrepresenting the facts, leads to losing your license. It could also bring additional civil and criminal penalties,” Chaney said.

The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office is working with MID on the enforcement cases and other matters still under review. The department said regulators in other states are conducting comparable investigations, indicating that similar licensing concerns may not be limited to Mississippi.
